During this year's Chinese New Year, the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs) of ten academic institutions in New York City will join hands and present a grand Chinese New Year celebration to the people of greater New York.

The ten institutions to host the joint celebration are:

Cornell University Medical College
The Rockefeller University
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
New York University Medical Center
Mount Sinai School of Medicine
City College of City University of New York
Hunter College of City University of New York
Queens College of City University of New York
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Polytechnic University

The original idea of holding a joint Chinese New Year celebration was brought up by the CSSA of Cornell University Medical College, the Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery in August, 2006. It was immediately welcomed by the CSSAs of the other seven academic institutions in New York City. The participating institutions signed an agreement in November 2006 to formally launch the preparations for the grand celebration. Holding the Chinese New Year celebration together with other schools in NYC makes it truly possible to share resources and integrate manpower as well as to promote the communication between members of the participating institutions and to bring the best performances to the audiences.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “unity, cooperation, friendship”. This grand event will celebrate the traditional New Year, promote the communication and cooperation of students and scholars in New York, and showcase Chinese tradition and culture to the American society. The organizers of this event include students and scholars from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore as well as the United States. Among the guests invited are Ambassador Biwei Liu of the Consulate-General of People’s Republic of China in New York, New York State Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Deans of the hosting academic institutions, and the leaders of various local Chinese organizations.

The logo of this grand celebration consists of the Chinese character “spring(春)” with the number “10” making up its lower portion, which symbolizes the wishes for an auspicious New Year from the students and scholars of ten institutions. Ten also means “the acme of perfection (十全十美)” in Chinese. The programs of the celebration have also been carefully prepared and consist of a variety of the best performances of the ten institutions as well as those from many invited professional artists.

We look forward to your presence and welcome you to share the joy and good wishes with us.
